Brenda Mixson and Tom Thornton discovered a stunning vineyard outside of Calistoga, nestled on the Lawley Old Toll Road at the foot of Mount Saint Helena in 1997. They acquired the property, engaged in the farming of its senescent vines for three harvests and by 2000 replanted the site into multiple distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon blocks. Its fruit was sold to Napa Valley’s finest wineries until they launched the small inaugural vintage of THE GRADE Cabernet Sauvignon from their new winery, THE GRADE Cellars in 2008.
The GRADE Cellars is a small producer of quality wines including 3 estate Cabernet Sauvignons and a single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, all grown and produced in the Calistoga/Napa Valley appellation:
The GRADE “Winfield Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon
The GRADE “Kingly Project” Cabernet Sauvignon
The GRADE “Serpent’s Back” Cabernet Sauvignon
The GRADE “Sea-Fog” Sauvignon Blanc
These wines are produced under the skilled and focused direction of a remarkable winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown, who is a perfect blend with Brenda and Tom in their patient pursuit of wine poetry. Tom has said that the goal with their wines is to find the perfect expression of a single vineyard, even a single block, in a bottle. Thomas has achieved this with the three distinctive Cabs from Winfield Vineyard.
The winery’s name and its labels are taken from passages in Robert Louis Stevenson’s book The Silverado Squatters in which Stevenson describes the spot where this vineyard is today. The Lawley Old Toll Road was, at the time, a stagecoach road climbing up the side of Mount St. Helena where Stevenson spent his honeymoon in the abandoned mining town of Silverado in 1880. Stevenson’s first words about his horse-drawn journey up the mountain were “we entered the Toll road, or, to be more local, we entered on ‘the grade’.”
