Our Muse

The revelations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s experiences in and around our vineyard and Calistoga were compelling. He became our muse. His poetry is read at our vineyard parties. Tom became a trustee of the valley’s Stevenson Museum.

Our portfolio of four distinctive Cabernet Sauvignons from our estate fruit are named from these passages from “The Silverado Squatters”. Our Sauvignon Blanc wine SEA-FOG was also inspired by a chapter title in the book.

THE GRADE

“We entered the Toll road, or, to be more local, entered on ’the grade.’ “

KINGLY PROJECT

There were four of us squatters—myself and my wife, the King and Queen of Silverado; Sam, the Crown Prince; and Chuchu, the Grand Duke.. I was impatient to be gone, to be about my kingly project.”

SERPENT'S BACK

“The sky itself was of a ruddy, powerful, nameless, changing colour, dark and glossy like a serpent’s back.”

HALF HEAVEN

“The milky way was bright, like a moonlit cloud; half heaven seemed milky way.”

SEA FOG

“The wind veered while we were at dinner, and began to blow squally from the mountain summit; and by half-past one, all that world of sea-fogs was utterly routed and flying here and there into the south in little rags of cloud.”

Artistic Terroir

RLS - Artistic Terroir

As part of the 2017 “Arts in April” program in Napa Valley, The GRADE Cellars created this Warhol-esque collection of RLS portraits on city property by working with art students at the RLS Middle School in St. Helena.
